The latest estimate for the 2025 VA Disability Pay Increase is 2.6%, which will be reflected in the updated 2025 VA Disability Rates effective December 1, 2024, with payments starting January 1, 2025.

This projection has been slightly adjusted downward after the July 2024 CPI report indicated easing inflation. If the trend continues, the final 2025 COLA could be below 2.6%; we won’t know until the official COLA accouncement in mid-October 2024.

Be sure to check the 2025 VA Disability Pay Chart below to see how these changes might affect your specific VA disability compensation rates, especially if you have dependents. My 2025 VA Pay Chart will provide detailed information on the updated rates for various dependency combinations, including those with school-aged children or spouses requiring Aid and Attendance (A/A).

Notes:

  • The 2025 VA pay chart lists rates for school children separately from other pay rates. All other entries showing rates for children apply to those under 18 or considered helpless.
  • To calculate the amount for a 70% disabled veteran with a spouse and four children, one of whom is over 18 and in school, use the 70% rate for a veteran with a spouse and three children, then add the rate for one school child.
  • If the veteran’s spouse requires Aid and Attendance (A/A), add the specified A/A amount to the corresponding rate. For instance, a 70% disabled veteran with an A/A spouse and two minor children should add $137.48 to the 70% rate.

What VA Benefits Programs Will Be Impacted By the 2025 COLA Increase?

These VA benefits programs will be impacted by the official 2025 VA COLA:

What is the 2025 VA Disability Pay Increase?

Yes, the latest estimate for the 2025 VA disability increase is 2.6%. This increase will apply to VA disability compensation rates starting December 1, 2024, with payments beginning on January 1, 2025. This estimate has been adjusted slightly downward due to a softer-than-expected July 2024 CPI report, indicating easing inflation. If this trend continues, the final COLA could be below 2.6%.

How Does the VA Determine My Rating Percentage?

The VA determines your disability rating using the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD), which evaluates over 900 conditions. Ratings range from 0% to 100% in 10% increments, reflecting the severity of your condition and its impact on your work, life, and social functioning. Each condition is assigned a rating under a specific diagnostic code. For multiple conditions, the VA uses a combined rating system to calculate your overall benefit.

How Can I Calculate My Combined VA Disability Rating?

Once the VA makes a decision, they will provide a rating decision letter detailing each condition’s individual rating and your total combined rating. Your total combined VA disability rating is used to find your payment rate in the pay chart. You can also calculate your combined rating using VA Claims Insider’s free VA disability calculator.

Is VA Disability Pay Tax-Free?

Yes, VA disability compensation is tax-free at both the federal and state levels. This ensures that your benefits are not reduced by income taxes, allowing you to fully utilize your compensation.

Do Dependents Qualify for VA Disability Pay?

Dependents do not receive VA disability payments directly, but if you have a combined VA disability rating of 30% or higher, you may qualify for additional compensation to account for your dependents. This can significantly increase your monthly payment. Eligible dependents include your spouse, children, and sometimes dependent parents. The 2025 VA disability pay chart reflects these adjustments, ensuring your compensation includes those who depend on your income.

How Do I Increase My VA Rating?

To apply for a VA disability increase, submit a new VA claim online for free at VA.gov, along with medical records for each condition you’re claiming. Your evidence should demonstrate how your symptoms have worsened and meet the criteria for a higher rating.
